About Me
"My name is David Leicken, MD. I am a board certified psychiatrist."
I am proud to say this now, but a few years back, I had very different
feelings about ABPN, and the process of getting board certified.
In fact, the process of passing part II became a defining point
in my life, stretching out over several years, and costing me
several thousand dollars. I found the whole experience to be frustrating and emotionally draining. After becoming board certified, I have had the opportunity to serve as a board examiner, and I have been involved with the administration
of a part II exam. I have had the privilege of seeing this process
from every angle except one - the person who becomes frustrated
enough to just give up and walk away. This has become the driving
force behind the Psychboards project. I want to help my psychiatric
colleagues to stay the course and become board certified. If I
can help you pass on the first shot, then great. For everyone
else, it is important to always keep in mind that about half of
all psychiatrists have failed some part of this exam. Those of
you struggling with the ABPN are in very good company.
On a more personal note, I currently live in Scottsdale, Arizona
with my family. I moved out here in January 1999 to work at the
VA in Phoenix. Prior to moving, I grew up, went to school, and
received my psychiatric training in New York. In addition to my
"day job" at the VA, I am executive director of a company called
Applied Psychiatric Strategies, LLC to allow me a structure to
develop educational tools and to do some consulting. When I am
not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, and photographing interesting places in Arizona. I also enjoy tinkering and puttering
with computers.
